Biggs Deli

Well, it was my turn to pick a place for brunch and we headed to Manx on Elgin St. Unfortunately, there was a wait and I was just too 'hangry' :) So then after another couple of places that turned out to be closed, we ended up at Biggs Deli where thankfully it was just a short wait.

While waiting, it became apparent that the COVID guidelines seem both confusing and senseless. They asked for proof of full vaccination, which is expected, however they did not ask for ID so I could have used anyone's. Then we noticed the woman in front of us made no attempt to have a mask on, nor did the man leaving the restaurant. I found myself quick to have judgemental thoughts, but then you have to wonder... what difference does it really make having a restaurant full of people sitting with no masks on and yet expecting everyone to have one on if they aren't at their table. Isn't that kinda like putting a peeing section in a pool?? Food for thought.. pun intended...

I had the eggs benedict and Pete had the standard breakfast special (with eggs cooked over easy). I am always hesitant to order eggs benny unless I have in the past and know that they do a good job poaching the eggs. Any runny or uncooked whites are an instant turn-off. Sadly as soon as I cut into the first egg, the whites ran out along with the yolk. Disappointing. I sent it back and by the time I got the replacement, Pete was almost finished his meal. The 2nd attempt was better.

Overall the food was pretty good, but we've had better. The hollandaise sauce was a bit on the bland side, but a generous amount which was nice for us sauce lovers! The homefries were crispy and well-seasoned and the fresh fruit was also good. Our server was very friendly and checked on us a few times throughout the meal. I do have to say that it was disappointing to see that the bill came with full costs attached. I had expected at least a bit of a discount after the mess-up with the poached eggs and the fact that we didn't really get to enjoy the meal at the same time. Big portion sizes but also higher priced than other places as well.
